Description
KaBOOM radar system space monitoring. Ka-Band Objects Observation and Monitoring (KaBOOM) is a NASA project that is aimed at demonstrating a Ka-Band phased array of antennas that can monitor space objects between dawn and dusk. Seen here are three 12-metre-diameter antennas at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The Ka-Band radar has high range resolution and high spatial resolution, able to detect near-Earth objects (NEOs), including small objects and orbital debris in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth. KaBOOM is a demonstration project for the later operational radar projects KARNAC (Ka band Array Radar for NEO Accurate Characterization) and SOAR (Space Object Array Radar). The first KaBOOM results were reported in 2015.
